I awoke the next morning feeling refreshed. I got myself ready for the day and walked down to the NICU. It was nice not to have a nurse wheel me down in a wheel chair.
Not expecting much change from the night before, I was pleasantly surprised to see Scarlett breathing more restfully. Her little left eye was peaking open while her right eye was swollen shut. She had a few sores on her nose and mouth area from tubes and tape that had irritated it.
They still had not started her milk feeding again, but she was taking a bright yellow fluid through an IV that contained all the necessary vitamins and nutrients that she needed to grow.
While I was there, her oxygen levels had dropped. The nurse worked hard to get it back up again and soon Scarlett was breathing easily again.
Today around 11am, Lee and Robyn brought our other children to see me. I hadn't seen them since we dropped them off at my sisters the night Scarlett was born. I was super excited to see their sweet little faces! I loved hearing them excitedly call my same when Jon opened my door. Grey came running in and then came to a screeching halt when he saw me in my hospital bed. I guess I didn't quite look like the mommy back home, but soon he warmed up. Hunter and Jaina loved pushing the buttons on my bed to make it move up and down. They also loved coloring their books that the NICU nurses made about Scarlett. Jaina was surprised to not see my belly so big anymore.
Lee and Robyn went to visit Scarlett. She is so blessed to have such loving grandparents on both sides. I know they will be a big influence in her life.
Jon and I went in after they came back. Dr. Simmons was examining Scarlett when we got there. Originally they had thought that Scarlett had a hairline fracture on her left femur, but he confirmed in was an actual break. They were going to have someone come in and put a soft splint on it the next day.
They also had to intibate her again, but she was still breathing on her own. The tube was just there to open up her airway to bypass all the thick secretions in her lungs and in the back of her throat.
Later that afternoon, they were going to do an ultrasound on her stomach and brain to check for any bleeding or abnormalities.
When Jon got back from going to lunch with the kids and his parents, we again went down to the NICU. Jon drew the curtains around us and gave Scarlett a blessing. I don't remember the words he said, but I do remember feeling comforted by them. She opened her little left eye while we were there. We loved that!
I think the highlight of this day, though, besides seeing Hunter, Jaina and Grey happened around 8pm.
We were down visiting Scarlett when the nurses came over to suck out her lungs and the back of her throat of the thick secretion. When they were done and walked away for a few minutes, we could tell Scarlett was crying. With a tube down her throat, she isn't able to make a real crying noise, but she was definitely crying. Jon began stroking her beautiful dark hair and made hushing noises. Immediately she began to calm down and eventually fell back to sleep. Jon had never been so handsome to me. It was the most wonderful experience for me to see Jon interact with her that way.
