Scarlett June: July 21, 2012

Scarlett is 1 week old today! It seems like this week has gone by so slowly, yet it feels like I just had her yesterday. It's funny that you feel that way sometimes.

I went to visit her again this morning. Dr. Simmons was there to give me an update. She still can't swallow so the secretions that build up in the back of her throat make it hard for her to breath.

They removed the IV from her head so she just has one in her belly button now.

And her feedings are up from 5ccs to 9ccs.

This morning as I was talking to Dr. Simmons, I told him my concerns about her nose twitching the last couple of days. He looked at her for a minute and held her jaw for a minute and said that he wanted to order an EEG to check for seizures. I didn't think much of it. When I pictured seizures, I thought of her whole body jerking around. The nice nurse came up within the hour to put the electrodes on Scarlett's pretty little head.

She didn't seem to mind. I gave her a little kiss and said goodbye so they could do the test.

That night, we met Jon's parents at the hospital. They said we could hold Scarlett and since I had been a Scarlett hog the past few times, I told Jon he could hold her and then Robyn did.

That night the nurse told us that Scarlett was in fact having seizures. During the 1 hour EEG, she had about 5. My heart dropped. Not my little Scarlett. She has so much she is already dealing with. I tried to hold back the tears, but they just came anyway. I couldn't bear to hear any more things wrong with my baby.

That next day they would start her on phenobarb to control the seizures.
